Cocktails By Law

Georgia has various laws regulating the legal age an individual needs to be to consume, sell, or serve alcoholic beverages and other regulations regarding the sale and service of alcoholic beverages. Within Georgia, the legal age to consume alcoholic beverages is 21. There are also rules and regulations regarding what is required to become a bartender in Georgia.

Ironically while there is opposition to allowing the sale of alcohol in grocery stores as well as liquor stores on Sundays, Georgia is introducing some several new alcohol-related measures that will become law. Anti-alcohol groups are asking is Georgia out of its mind?

These include increases in the allowable maximum alcohol content in beer from 6 percent to 14 percent; allowing restaurant patrons to take home unfinished bottles of wine they order with their meal; allowing Georgians to go online and purchase up to 12 cases of wine a year directly from wineries and permission for limousine drivers to sell cocktails to their customers i.e. sell cocktails in limos

Previously limo hire companies were not normally required by law to have a liquor licence as they did not technically sell the drinks passengers consume on their journey. That is, they are in included in the cost of hiring the limo and are complimentary or free of charge. Some limo companies do not provide alcohol, but don’t mind if you provide your own.

Limo hire companies provide a service to the public and therefore have a social responsibility to ensure that they obey the laws and regulations like any other corporate citizen. However, if you intend consuming alcohol while riding in a hire limo you should check to see if the limousine has a liquor license.

While the idea of a chauffer serving drinks from a limo bar is new, it is also interesting to speculate as to who will actually mix these exotic beverages. Will the chauffeur wear two hats - driver and barman? Or, will there be a sudden demand for cocktail waitresses? And, beside state law, there are the laws of physics to consider. Is it harder to drink out of cocktail glasses than champagne glasses in a moving limo?

Underage drinking is illegal and should not be allowed or tolerated. If the limo is to be used by clients who are under the legally permissible drinking age, the limo should have an enforceable no alcohol policy.
